It can be a challenge in a busy life to make time for the things that you love. I know that I have to ring fence time to write, as well as time to practice self care. I have been writing for twenty years, been a tutor in creative writing for years, and used to work in BBC TV Drama. All have brought me great happiness.
I have been studying wellbeing since the start of the pandemic. I am also training to be a counsellor. Contracting long-covid, I had to find ways to help heal myself and feel happy again through some challenging times. Writing and self-care have been important for me, as well as spending time in nature.
I realised I could usefully combine my skills and experience, both as a writer and using the wellbeing practices that I have learnt, to share the increasingly recognised benefits of writing for wellbeing with others. I felt compelled to do something, and this course is the result.
We will be working in small groups, as well as learning together and sharing our stories. We will be leaving 'perfection' at the door in order to allow our imaginations to be free in a safe space. This course is about unlocking and nurturing creativity and wellbeing, through gentle and supportive practices, using poetry, storytelling and nature. We will be exploring the role both mindfulness and improvisation have on creativity, in order to work towards improving our wellbeing through writing practices.
A simple overview of the structure of the course:
